Genetic recombination

Genetic recombination forms new combinations of genetic material through DNA exchange, rearrangement, or reassortment. It occurs in processes such as meiosis, DNA repair, and microbial gene transfer.

Homologous recombination: DNA exchange between molecules with matching or highly similar sequences, often using one molecule as a repair template. This route exchanges corresponding DNA segments and drives crossing over between homologous chromosomes.
Genetic linkage: The tendency of alleles close together on a chromosome to be inherited together. Recombination frequency reveals how strongly linked loci are separated along chromosomes.
Meiosis: A cell-division process that produces haploid cells through two successive divisions. Recombination during meiosis reshuffles parental alleles before chromosome segregation.
Mutation: A heritable change in the nucleotide sequence of genetic material. Mutation creates new sequence variants; recombination primarily rearranges existing variants.
Crossing over: Reciprocal exchange of DNA between paired chromosomes, usually during meiosis. It is the visible chromosomal outcome of meiotic recombination between homologs.
Genetic mapping: Methods for locating genes or genetic markers using inheritance patterns or molecular data. Recombination frequencies provide the basis for classical linkage maps.
Homologous chromosomes: A pair of chromosomes with corresponding genes, one inherited from each parent. Their alignment provides matching sequences for meiotic exchange.
Independent assortment: The random distribution of different chromosome pairs into gametes during meiosis. It reshuffles whole chromosomes, whereas recombination exchanges DNA within chromosome pairs.
Site-specific recombination: DNA rearrangement at defined sequences catalyzed by specialized recombination enzymes. Unlike homologous exchange, this route can rearrange DNA without long matching sequences.
Marker-assisted selection: A breeding strategy that selects individuals using DNA markers linked to desired traits. Recombination can separate a marker from its target trait, limiting selection accuracy.
