George Boole

George Boole (1815–1864) was an English mathematician and logician who developed an algebraic system for representing logical operations and propositions.

Propositional logic: A formal system that studies how propositions combine through logical connectives. Boole turned combinations of propositions into algebraic expressions.
Boolean operations: Operations on truth values, commonly conjunction, disjunction, and negation. These operations express the logical combinations at the heart of Boole’s system.
Lincoln, Lincolnshire: A city in eastern England where George Boole was born and began his working life. Boole was born there in 1815 and initially worked as a schoolteacher.
Augustus De Morgan: A British mathematician and logician known for work on formal logic and mathematical induction. De Morgan and Boole developed influential but distinct algebraic approaches to logic.
Claude Shannon: An American mathematician and engineer whose work established key foundations of information theory and digital circuit design. Shannon showed how Boolean algebra could analyze relay and switching circuits.
Boolean algebra: An algebraic structure whose operations model logical conjunction, disjunction, and negation. It became the mathematical form most closely associated with Boole’s logic.
Truth value: A value indicating whether a proposition is true or false. Boole’s algebra assigns logical significance to the values represented by its symbols.
Mechanics' Institute: An educational institution providing lectures and study opportunities, especially for working people. Boole used the Lincoln Mechanics’ Institute library in his largely self-directed mathematical education.
John Venn: An English logician and philosopher who introduced diagrams for representing set relations. Venn’s diagrams offered a visual method for relationships also treated algebraically by Boole.
Digital logic: The use of discrete-valued signals and logical operations to represent and process information. Boolean operations became a standard mathematical basis for digital systems.
