German unification

The process that united most German states under Prussian leadership in 1871, creating the German Empire. It was driven by diplomacy, wars, and nationalist politics.

Otto von Bismarck: Prussian statesman who served as minister-president from 1862 and as chancellor of the German Empire from 1871. His diplomacy and calculated wars advanced unification under Prussian leadership.
German Confederation: A loose association of German states established in 1815 after the Napoleonic Wars and dissolved in 1866. It was the principal framework that Prussia displaced on the path to unity.

German Question: The nineteenth-century debate over the boundaries and political form of a unified German nation-state. The 1871 settlement answered it through a Prussian-led union that excluded Austria.
Erfurt Union: A Prussian proposal for a German union formed in 1849–1850 that failed under Austrian and Russian pressure. It was an earlier Prussian-led attempt at unity, abandoned before Bismarck's wars.
