Knowra Ghassan Kanafani Ghassan Kanafani Ghassan Kanafani (1936–1972) was a Palestinian novelist, journalist, and political activist whose fiction and essays explored exile, resistance, and Palestinian identity.
Nakba : The mass displacement and dispossession of Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war and Israel’s establishment. Kanafani was displaced from Acre as a child during the events remembered as the Nakba.
Men in the Sun : A 1963 novella by Kanafani about three Palestinian refugees attempting to cross Iraq’s desert into Kuwait. Its doomed journey gives narrative form to exile, desperation, and failed rescue.
George Habash : A Palestinian physician and political leader who founded the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Kanafani worked within the PFLP, the organization Habash led.
Acre : A historic coastal city in present-day Israel, known in Arabic as Akka. Kanafani was born in Acre, which his family fled in 1948.
