Ghassanids

The Ghassanids were an Arab Christian dynasty and tribal confederation that ruled parts of the Levant as allies and frontier clients of the Byzantine Empire from late antiquity into the seventh century.

Foederati: Foederati were peoples or groups bound to Rome by treaties that supplied military service in exchange for benefits or settlement. The Ghassanids defended Byzantine borders through the broader Roman system of treaty-bound allies.
Azdi migration: The movement of Azd groups from southern Arabia into the Levant and other regions during late antiquity. Traditions connect the Ghassanids’ arrival in the Levant with migration by Azd tribes.
Arethas: Arethas was the Greek name used for several Ghassanid rulers, including al-Harith ibn Jabalah. Al-Harith was among the most prominent Ghassanid kings recognized by Byzantine emperors.
Arab–Byzantine relations: Arab–Byzantine relations encompassed political, military, commercial, and religious contacts between Arab groups and the Byzantine Empire. The Ghassanids were a central channel of cooperation between Byzantine authorities and Arab communities.

Al-Mundhir III ibn al-Harith: Al-Mundhir III ibn al-Harith was a sixth-century Ghassanid ruler and son of al-Harith ibn Jabalah. His reign shows both the military influence and the religious tensions of Ghassanid kingship.
Byzantine frontier: The Byzantine frontier was the shifting zone where imperial authority met neighboring powers and allied peoples. Ghassanid forces helped defend and administer this frontier in the Levant.
Battle of Fahl: The Battle of Fahl was a seventh-century engagement in which Muslim forces defeated Byzantine troops in the Jordan Valley. It formed part of the campaign that dismantled Byzantine control over Ghassanid territory.
