Global North and Global South

A broad geopolitical distinction between relatively wealthy, influential countries and less wealthy countries. The terms describe unequal global power shaped by colonialism and do not map neatly onto geography.

North–South divide: A broad division between wealthy industrialized countries and less wealthy developing countries. This older framing helped establish the language later expressed as Global North and Global South.
International Monetary Fund: An international organization that works to support monetary cooperation and financial stability. Its lending and policy conditions have been debated for their effects on poorer countries.
Three Worlds Theory: A Cold War classification dividing countries into capitalist, communist, and non-aligned groupings. It organized global difference around political alignment rather than the North–South distinction’s emphasis on inequality.
Brandt Report: A 1980 report by the Independent Commission on International Development Issues on global economic inequality. Its North–South framing helped popularize a geographic image of global economic divisions.
Global South: A broad, contested term for countries and communities positioned outside wealthy, influential global centers. Its varied meanings show why the paired distinction resists a precise country-by-country boundary.
Postcolonialism: The study of colonialism’s continuing effects on societies, cultures, and political power. It examines the historical power relations embedded in this global distinction.
World Bank: An international institution that provides financing and expertise for development projects and poverty reduction. Its development role reflects the unequal influence countries hold in global institutions.
Developing country: A country commonly described as having lower income or industrialization than highly developed economies. This label overlaps with Global South but frames difference through a contested development ranking.
Willy Brandt: A German politician who served as West Germany’s chancellor from 1969 to 1974. He chaired the commission whose report brought the North–South distinction to wider attention.
Global North: A broad, contested term for wealthy and influential countries, including some outside the Northern Hemisphere. Its geographic mismatch exposes the metaphorical rather than strictly cartographic nature of the distinction.
