Gnaeus Naevius

Gnaeus Naevius was a Roman poet and playwright of the third century BCE. His Latin epic Bellum Poenicum combined Rome’s founding legends with the First Punic War.

Bellum Poenicum: A fragmentary Latin epic by Naevius that recounts Rome’s origins and the First Punic War. This poem is Naevius’s defining work and his most distinctive fusion of legend and contemporary history.
First Punic War: A war between Rome and Carthage fought from 264 to 241 BCE, chiefly over Sicily and the western Mediterranean. Naevius’s epic used this war as a central historical subject.
