Grain elevator

A facility that receives, stores, and transfers bulk grain, often using mechanical equipment. Its bins and conveyors move crops between trucks, railcars, ships, and storage.

Bucket elevator: A conveyor that uses attached buckets to lift loose material vertically. It raises grain from receiving pits to the elevator’s upper floors.
Bulk material handling: The movement and storage of large quantities of loose materials using mechanical systems. Grain elevators are specialized bulk-material handling facilities.
Grain trade: The buying, selling, and transportation of cereal grains and other staple crops. Elevators collect and consolidate grain for commercial sale.
Joseph Dart: An American merchant credited with building the first steam-powered grain elevator in Buffalo in 1842. Dart’s elevator mechanized grain transfer from ships into storage.
Grain dust explosion: A rapid combustion event caused when suspended combustible grain dust ignites in an enclosed space. Dust accumulation and ignition sources make elevator operations vulnerable to catastrophic explosions.
Grain leg: A tall bucket-elevator assembly used to move grain vertically in bulk-handling facilities. This vertical conveyor gives grain elevators their characteristic height.
Silo: A tall structure used to store bulk materials, including grain and silage. Tall silos provide the storage capacity often integrated into elevators.
Grain terminal: A large facility that handles bulk grain for long-distance transport, often by ship. Terminal elevators aggregate grain for shipment through major ports or inland hubs.
Oliver Evans: An American inventor whose automated flour mill designs used interconnected machinery and continuous material handling. His mill systems helped establish principles later used in grain handling.
Grain entrapment: A workplace hazard in which flowing or collapsing grain engulfs and suffocates a person. Grain can behave like a fluid, creating lethal engulfment hazards inside bins.
