Grand Alliance

The Grand Alliance was a coalition formed in 1701 by the Dutch Republic, England, and the Holy Roman Emperor to prevent the French and Spanish crowns from uniting under Bourbon rule.

War of the Spanish Succession: A European conflict fought from 1701 to 1714 over who would inherit the Spanish monarchy. The alliance’s formation opened this war against Philip V and French expansion.
Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor: Holy Roman Emperor from 1658 to 1705 and a principal opponent of Bourbon claims to Spain. He represented the Habsburg interest that anchored the alliance’s continental campaign.
Treaty of Utrecht: A series of treaties signed from 1713 that ended much of the War of the Spanish Succession and redrew European borders. Its settlements ended the alliance’s war while preserving Philip V in Spain.
League of Augsburg: A 1686 alliance of European powers formed to resist French expansion under Louis XIV. It was the predecessor coalition whose renewed struggle became the War of the Spanish Succession.
Charles II of Spain: The last Habsburg king of Spain, whose death in 1700 without an heir triggered a succession crisis. His will named a Bourbon successor, prompting the alliance’s founding.
John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough: An English general and statesman who led major allied campaigns in the War of the Spanish Succession. His battlefield leadership coordinated English and Dutch forces with imperial allies.
Treaty of Rastatt: A 1714 treaty between France and the Holy Roman Emperor that ended their state of war. It concluded the emperor’s conflict with France after the other allies had made peace.
Quadruple Alliance (1718): A 1718 coalition of Britain, France, the Dutch Republic, and the Holy Roman Emperor against Spanish expansion in Italy. It reversed the wartime alignment by making France a partner of former Grand Alliance members.
Philip V of Spain: The first Bourbon king of Spain, who inherited the Spanish throne in 1700. His accession raised the alliance’s central fear of a united Bourbon monarchy.
Eugene of Savoy: An imperial general and statesman who commanded Habsburg forces in several European wars. He partnered with Marlborough in campaigns that sustained the alliance’s military pressure.
