Granville Sharp

Granville Sharp (1735–1813) was an English abolitionist and scholar whose campaign helped establish that enslaved people brought to England could not be forcibly returned to slavery.

Somerset v Stewart: A 1772 English court case in which Lord Mansfield ruled that James Somerset could not be forcibly removed from England and sold into slavery. Sharp supported Somerset’s legal challenge, which helped define the limits of slavery in England.
Habeas corpus: A legal procedure requiring authorities to bring a detained person before a court to assess the lawfulness of detention. Somerset’s supporters used the procedure to contest his confinement and proposed removal.
