Great Salt Desert

The Great Salt Desert, or Dasht-e Kavir, is a vast salt desert in central Iran, marked by salt flats, salt marshes, and arid basins.

Kavir: A salt-encrusted flat or marsh in Iran’s arid interior, formed where water evaporates and leaves mineral deposits. Kavirs are the characteristic salt flats and marshes that define the desert’s landscape.
Iranian Plateau: A highland region covering much of Iran and adjoining parts of southwestern Asia. The Great Salt Desert occupies the arid interior of this broad plateau.
Rig-e Jenn: A remote dune field in the western part of the Dasht-e Kavir in Iran. Its shifting sands contrast with the surrounding salt flats and marshes.
Silk Road: A network of overland trade routes linking East Asia with Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. Routes across Iran’s interior connected settlements around the desert to wider trade networks.
Iranian cheetah: A critically endangered subspecies of cheetah surviving in Iran’s arid landscapes. Its remaining habitat includes protected areas along the desert region.
Salt pan: A flat, dry lakebed where water evaporates and leaves a surface crust of salts. Salt pans explain the broad, pale crusted surfaces found across the desert.
Central Iran: The inland region of Iran between its major mountain ranges and peripheral lowlands. This is the region in which the Great Salt Desert lies.
Kavir National Park: A protected area in Semnan Province, Iran, encompassing desert and steppe habitats. The park protects a substantial tract of the Great Salt Desert’s landscapes and wildlife.
Caravanserai: A roadside inn built to shelter caravans, travelers, and their animals along trade routes. Caravanserais provided stopping places on routes traversing the desert margins.
Persian onager: A subspecies of Asiatic wild ass native to Iran and neighboring parts of southwestern Asia. Its conservation depends on the condition and connectivity of arid habitats near the desert.
