Great Zimbabwe

Great Zimbabwe is a medieval stone-built city in southeastern Zimbabwe that served as the center of a major Shona kingdom and gave the country its name.

Great Enclosure: The largest stone enclosure at Great Zimbabwe, distinguished by its tall curved walls and narrow passageways. Its monumental walls are the site's most recognizable architectural achievement.
Gold trade: The extraction and exchange of gold between producers, merchants, and markets. Gold from the Zimbabwe plateau entered regional and overseas exchange networks.
Mapungubwe: An early southern African kingdom and stone-walled settlement near the Limpopo River, flourishing before Great Zimbabwe. It offers an earlier example of social hierarchy and long-distance trade in the region.
Zimbabwe: A landlocked country in southern Africa, named after the Great Zimbabwe ruins. The site's name became the name of the modern nation at independence.
Hill Complex: A complex of stone-walled structures on a granite hill at Great Zimbabwe. Its elevated setting and successive walls formed a major part of the city.

Kilwa Kisiwani: A medieval Swahili trading city and port on an island off present-day Tanzania. Its prosperity was tied to inland gold networks that included the Zimbabwe plateau.
