Greater Somalia

Greater Somalia is a proposed Somali nation-state uniting Somali-inhabited territories in Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Kenya. Its irredentist vision has shaped regional politics and conflict.

Somali nationalism: A political movement promoting Somali unity, identity, and self-determination. Its pan-Somali strand supplied the national ideal behind Greater Somalia.
Irredentism: A political movement seeking to unite territory inhabited by a related ethnic or national group across state borders. Greater Somalia is a prominent case of claims to reunite a divided national population.
Somaliland: A self-declared independent state in northwestern Somalia, formerly the British protectorate of Somaliland. Its history shows how one claimed territory developed a separate political trajectory.

Kenya–Somalia relations: The political and diplomatic relations between Kenya and Somalia. Somalia’s support for Somali secessionists in Kenya left a lasting mark on bilateral relations.
African Union border policy: The African Union’s commitment to respect the borders inherited by member states at independence. This principle opposed territorial revisions that could follow Greater Somalia’s claims.
