Gregory Bateson

Gregory Bateson was an English anthropologist and systems theorist whose work connected communication, learning, mind, and ecology. His interdisciplinary ideas shaped cybernetics, family therapy, and ecological thought.

Cybernetics: The study of control and communication in animals, machines, and organizations through feedback. Its feedback concepts supplied a framework for Bateson’s account of mind and communication.
Margaret Mead: An American cultural anthropologist known for studies of adolescence, gender, and culture in the Pacific. Mead was Bateson’s collaborator in fieldwork and his wife for part of his career.
Theory of mind: The capacity to attribute beliefs, intentions, and other mental states to oneself and others. Bateson’s account of mind emphasized relational patterns rather than an isolated individual.
Family therapy: Psychotherapy that treats family relationships and interaction patterns as central to distress and change. Bateson’s research group helped establish communication patterns as a focus of therapeutic inquiry.
Psychological behaviorism: A psychological approach that explains behavior through observable actions and their environmental conditioning. Bateson’s focus on communication and relational context resisted explanations based only on individual behavior.
Feedback: A process in which a system’s outputs influence its subsequent inputs. Bateson used feedback to describe how organisms and relationships regulate behavior.
Bali: An Indonesian island whose religious, artistic, and social traditions have drawn extensive ethnographic study. Bateson and Mead studied Balinese life and developed a distinctive visual ethnography there.
Learning: A process through which experience produces a relatively lasting change in knowledge or behavior. Bateson distinguished levels of learning, from adjusting responses to changing the rules of response.
Mental Research Institute: A Palo Alto research and training center that became influential in family therapy and brief psychotherapy. Researchers associated with Bateson’s project later helped found this institute.
Cartesian dualism: The philosophical division of reality into distinct mental and material substances. Bateson’s ecology of mind challenged the separation of mind from body and environment.
