Grote Reber

Grote Reber (1911–2002) was an American radio engineer and amateur astronomer who built the first purpose-built radio telescope and conducted the first systematic survey of the radio sky.

Radio astronomy: The study of celestial objects and phenomena through their radio-frequency emissions. Reber’s telescope and sky surveys helped turn this field into an observational science.
Radio telescope: An instrument that detects and measures radio waves emitted or reflected by astronomical objects. Reber’s instrument was an early purpose-built example of this observing technology.
