Jan Oort

Jan Oort was a Dutch astronomer whose work established the Milky Way’s rotation and structure. He proposed a distant reservoir of comets, now called the Oort cloud.

Oort constants: Two parameters describing the local rotation and shear of the Milky Way’s disk. They quantify the differential Galactic rotation Oort inferred from stellar motions.
Oort limit: An estimate of the density of matter near the Sun derived from stellar motions perpendicular to the Galactic plane. Oort used vertical stellar motions to estimate the local density of Galactic matter.
Leiden Observatory: A Dutch astronomical research institution founded in 1633 and based in Leiden. Oort spent much of his career there, directing its research and observatory.
Hendrik van de Hulst: A Dutch astronomer who predicted the 21-centimeter radio emission line of neutral hydrogen. Oort recognized the line’s promise and helped organize its astronomical detection.
Milky Way: The barred spiral galaxy that contains the Solar System and billions of other stars. Oort’s studies helped establish its rotation, structure, and scale.
Proper motion: The apparent angular change in a star’s position across the sky over time. Measured stellar motions helped reveal the Milky Way’s rotation.
Kapteyn's universe: Jacobus Kapteyn’s early model of the Milky Way, based on star counts and stellar motions. Oort’s Galactic work developed from the stellar astronomy shaped by Kapteyn’s model.
Grote Reber: An American radio engineer who built the first parabolic radio telescope for astronomy. His early surveys demonstrated radio astronomy’s potential before Oort’s postwar programs.
Oort cloud: A hypothesized distant, roughly spherical reservoir of icy bodies surrounding the Solar System. Oort proposed it as the source of long-period comets.
Radial velocity: The component of an object’s velocity along the line of sight, measured through shifts in its spectrum. Combined with proper motions, it helped map nearby stellar movement.
