Gulag

The Gulag was the Soviet state system of forced-labor camps and related institutions, administered by the security apparatus. It imprisoned millions and supplied coerced labor across the Soviet Union.

Gulag labor colonies: Penal institutions in the Soviet Union that held prisoners under less restrictive regimes than corrective-labor camps. They formed part of the wider network of institutions administered alongside camps.
Solovki prison camp: A Soviet prison camp established in the Solovetsky Islands in the early 1920s. Solovki became an early model for later forced-labor camps.
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn: A Russian writer and former Soviet prisoner whose books exposed the camp system to international audiences. His account made the Gulag a widely recognized name beyond the Soviet Union.
Kolyma: A remote region of northeastern Siberia associated with some of the Soviet Union’s harshest labor camps. Its gold mines and lethal climate became emblematic of extreme camp conditions.
Gulag memoir: First-person writing by former prisoners about arrest, imprisonment, forced labor, and survival in Soviet camps. Memoirs preserve experiences that official Soviet accounts long suppressed.
Katorga: A form of penal hard labor used in the Russian Empire and revived in the Soviet Union. Soviet authorities used the term for especially severe forced-labor sentences.
Main Camp Administration: The Soviet administrative body established in 1930 to oversee the expanding network of labor camps. Its creation marked the consolidation of camps into a centralized system.
Varlam Shalamov: A Russian writer imprisoned for many years in Kolyma whose stories depict camp life. His fiction records the bodily and moral degradation of extreme camp conditions.
Vorkuta labor camp: A major Soviet camp complex near the Arctic Circle, where prisoners mined coal. Vorkuta shows how forced labor opened remote industrial regions.
Gulag literature: Writing shaped by Soviet camp imprisonment, including memoir, testimony, and fiction. These works turned private suffering into a lasting record of state violence.
