Gulf of Finland

An eastern arm of the Baltic Sea between Finland and Estonia, extending eastward to St. Petersburg, Russia.

Baltic Sea: A largely enclosed northern European sea connected to the North Sea through the Danish straits. The Gulf of Finland is one of its eastern arms.
Baltic Sea exchange: The movement of water between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea through the Danish straits. Restricted exchange helps make the gulf’s parent sea brackish.
Port of St. Petersburg: A major Russian seaport on the eastern Gulf of Finland. It anchors the gulf’s eastern end and handles substantial maritime traffic.

Neva Bay: The shallow easternmost part of the Gulf of Finland, bordering St. Petersburg. The Neva’s large freshwater inflow strongly shapes this inner basin.
