Gulf of Oman

The Gulf of Oman is an arm of the Arabian Sea connecting it to the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf.

Arabian Sea: A marginal sea of the northern Indian Ocean, bounded by the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent. The Gulf opens westward into this sea.
Oil tanker: A ship designed to carry petroleum or petroleum products in bulk. Tankers cross the Gulf on routes connecting Gulf ports with the open ocean.
Indian Ocean monsoon: A seasonal reversal of winds over the Indian Ocean that brings distinct wet and dry seasons to surrounding regions. Monsoon winds influence circulation and conditions in the Gulf.
Operation Praying Mantis: A United States naval operation against Iranian targets on 18 April 1988 during the Iran–Iraq War. The naval engagements occurred in and around the Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf.
Strait of Hormuz: A narrow maritime passage linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. This strait forms the Gulf’s western entrance.
Maritime chokepoint: A narrow or strategically constrained sea passage through which substantial maritime traffic must pass. The Gulf provides access to the Strait of Hormuz, a major chokepoint.
Coastal upwelling: The rise of cold, nutrient-rich deep water toward the ocean surface near a coast. Seasonal winds can drive upwelling along parts of the Gulf’s coast.
Iran–Iraq War: A war between Iran and Iraq fought from 1980 to 1988. The conflict’s tanker attacks and naval operations affected Gulf shipping.
Persian Gulf: A shallow sea between the Iranian plateau and the Arabian Peninsula, connected to the Gulf of Oman through the Strait of Hormuz. It lies beyond the strait at the Gulf’s western end.
Port of Sohar: A deep-water port and industrial hub on Oman’s northern coast near the Strait of Hormuz. It is a major commercial port on the Gulf’s southern shore.
