Gulf of Thailand

The Gulf of Thailand is a shallow marginal sea in the western Pacific, bordered by Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

South China Sea: A marginal sea of the western Pacific bordered by Southeast Asia and southern China. The Gulf of Thailand forms a northwestern extension of this larger sea.
Northeast monsoon: A seasonal wind system that brings generally drier conditions to much of mainland Southeast Asia. Its winds influence surface circulation and seasonal weather over the gulf.
Gulf of Thailand fisheries: Commercial and subsistence fishing activities in the Gulf of Thailand and its coastal waters. The gulf’s shallow, productive waters sustain important regional fisheries.
Coral bleaching: The loss of symbiotic algae or their pigments from corals, often caused by heat stress. Warming waters put coral communities around the gulf at risk.
Indochinese Peninsula: A mainland Southeast Asian peninsula between the Bay of Bengal and the South China Sea. The gulf occupies the peninsula’s southeastern side.
Southwest monsoon: A seasonal wind system that brings moist air and heavy rainfall to much of Southeast Asia. Its winds alter gulf circulation and deliver rainfall to surrounding coasts.
Aquaculture in Thailand: The farming of aquatic organisms in Thailand, including fish and shrimp. Coastal aquaculture uses sheltered gulf waters and nearby estuaries.
Marine plastic pollution: Plastic debris and particles entering oceans and harming marine ecosystems. Rivers and dense coastal populations carry plastic into the gulf.
Continental shelf: A shallow, submerged margin of a continent extending from the shoreline to the continental slope. A broad shelf makes the gulf unusually shallow.
Tides: Periodic changes in sea level caused mainly by the gravitational forces of the Moon and Sun. Tides mix water and affect navigation in the shallow gulf.
