Guru Angad

Guru Angad (1504–1552) was the second Sikh Guru, succeeding Guru Nanak. He standardized and promoted the Gurmukhi script and helped organize the growing Sikh community.

Gurmukhi: A script used to write Punjabi, standardized and promoted by Guru Angad. His promotion of this script gave Sikh teachings a distinctive written form.
Guru Nanak: The founder of Sikhism and the first of the Sikh Gurus. Guru Angad became his successor and carried forward his teachings.
Mata Khivi: A Sikh woman remembered for organizing and sustaining the langar during the early Guru period. She helped maintain community service and langar alongside Guru Angad’s leadership.
Punjabi language: An Indo-Aryan language spoken chiefly in Punjab in India and Pakistan. Gurmukhi became a major script for writing the language in which Sikh teachings circulated.
Adi Granth: The early Sikh scripture compiled by Guru Arjan in 1604, later incorporated into the Guru Granth Sahib. Guru Angad’s script helped provide the written medium for the scripture compiled generations later.
Guru Amar Das: The third Sikh Guru, who succeeded Guru Angad in 1552. His appointment by Guru Angad continued the line of Sikh Gurus.
Guru Ram Das: The fourth Sikh Guru, who succeeded Guru Amar Das in 1574. His later leadership belongs to the succession Guru Angad helped establish.
Sikh scripture: The sacred writings of Sikhism, including hymns by Sikh Gurus and other devotional poets. Guru Angad’s script work supported the preservation and transmission of Sikh sacred writings.
Sikhism: A monotheistic religion founded in Punjab by Guru Nanak in the fifteenth century. His leadership helped the faith founded by Guru Nanak become an enduring community.
Kartar Pur: A town in Punjab associated with Guru Nanak and the early Sikh community. Guru Angad’s early life and leadership were tied to the community formed around Guru Nanak.
