Gustavus Adolphus

Gustavus Adolphus was king of Sweden from 1611 to 1632 and a leading Protestant commander in the Thirty Years’ War. He was killed at the Battle of Lützen.

Axel Oxenstierna: A Swedish statesman who served as chancellor under Gustavus Adolphus and governed during his military campaigns. He coordinated Sweden’s government and war effort while Gustavus campaigned abroad.

Battle of Lützen: A 1632 battle in which Swedish forces defeated an imperial army, though Gustavus Adolphus was killed. The king’s death during this costly victory altered Sweden’s leadership.
