Haber–Bosch process

An industrial process that synthesizes ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen over an iron catalyst at high pressure and temperature, enabling synthetic fertilizer.

Iron catalyst: Promoted magnetite catalyst that dissociates the strong nitrogen triple bond on its surface during ammonia synthesis. The nitrogen triple bond only breaks on the catalyst surface; the catalyst makes industrial rates possible.
Fritz Haber: German chemist who demonstrated ammonia synthesis from nitrogen and hydrogen in 1909. Haber solved the chemistry, finding workable pressure, temperature and osmium catalyst in his Karlsruhe lab.
Green Revolution: Mid-20th-century surge in crop yields driven by fertilizer, irrigation and new high-yield crop varieties. Synthetic nitrogen fertilizer from the process was a precondition for the yield gains.
Ammonia fertilizer: Nitrogen fertilizers such as urea and ammonium nitrate manufactured from synthetic ammonia. Roughly half of the ammonia produced feeds the world's cropland as fertilizer.
Electrochemical nitrogen reduction: Attempted ambient-condition reduction of nitrogen to ammonia at an electrode, replacing high-pressure synthesis. The leading candidate to replace Haber–Bosch; reproducible rates and yields remain disputed.
Le Chatelier's principle: The rule that an equilibrium shifts to counteract changes in pressure, temperature or concentration. Ammonia formation shrinks gas volume, so high pressure drives the equilibrium toward product.
Carl Bosch: BASF chemist and later company head who scaled ammonia synthesis to industry by 1913. Bosch turned Haber's bench demonstration into the Oppau plant, overcoming metallurgy and catalyst problems.
Haber–Bosch nitrogen cycle disruption: The roughly doubling of reactive nitrogen flows on Earth caused by industrial ammonia production. Humans now fix more nitrogen than all natural terrestrial sources combined, with runoff and emissions as costs.
Ammonia as hydrogen carrier: Proposed use of liquid ammonia to store and ship hydrogen energy without cryogenic containers. Ammonia's established infrastructure makes it a leading candidate for a carbon-free fuel trade.
Nitrogenase: The bacterial enzyme complex that fixes nitrogen at ambient temperature and pressure using ATP. Biology fixes nitrogen gently; mimicking nitrogenase's iron-molybdenum cofactor is an active research goal.
