Knowra Haganah Haganah Haganah was the principal Jewish military organization in Mandatory Palestine from 1920 until Israel’s independence in 1948. It became the core from which the Israel Defense Forces was formed.
Palmach : The Haganah’s elite strike force, established in 1941 and integrated into the Israel Defense Forces in 1948. This force supplied Haganah’s most mobile units and later formed a prominent part of the new army.
Yishuv : The Jewish community in Palestine before the establishment of Israel in 1948. Haganah was the Yishuv’s principal organized defense force.
David Ben-Gurion : A leading Zionist politician who became Israel’s first prime minister and directed the Yishuv’s wartime institutions. Ben-Gurion’s authority over the Jewish Agency shaped Haganah’s strategic priorities and later its reorganization.
Aliyah Bet : The clandestine immigration of Jews to Mandatory Palestine, especially during British restrictions from 1934 to 1948. Haganah helped organize clandestine immigration and used its resources to bring Holocaust survivors to Palestine.
Israeli Declaration of Independence : The declaration establishing the State of Israel, proclaimed in Tel Aviv on 14 May 1948. Independence transformed Haganah from a pre-state organization into the basis of a state military.
Haganah Intelligence Service : The Haganah’s intelligence organization, known by its Hebrew acronym Shai, active during the Mandate period. Shai gathered intelligence for Haganah operations and helped establish Israeli intelligence services.
British Mandate for Palestine : The League of Nations mandate under British administration that governed Palestine from 1920 to 1948. Haganah operated under British rule, which alternately restricted, tolerated, and enlisted Jewish defense activity.
Eliyahu Golomb : A Zionist military organizer who helped build and lead Haganah from its early years until his death in 1945. Golomb was central to Haganah’s command and development into a countrywide force.
Saison : The Haganah-led campaign of 1944–1945 in which Jewish forces cooperated with British authorities against the Irgun. The campaign shows Haganah’s willingness to suppress Jewish rivals it considered a threat to the Yishuv.
1948 Arab–Israeli War : The war between Israel and neighboring Arab states, alongside fighting between Jewish and Palestinian Arab forces, in 1947–1949. Haganah became the principal Jewish military force in the conflict and was absorbed into Israel’s army.
