Han–Xiongnu wars

A series of military conflicts between the Han dynasty and the Xiongnu confederation, fought mainly from the second century BCE to the first century CE.

Xiongnu: A nomadic confederation that dominated much of the eastern Eurasian steppe during the late third and second centuries BCE. The confederation’s political and military structure shaped the forces Han faced.
Qin–Xiongnu wars: Military conflicts between the Qin state and Xiongnu forces during the late third century BCE. These earlier struggles established the northern frontier tensions inherited by the Han.
Wei Qing: A Han general who led successful campaigns against the Xiongnu during Emperor Wu’s reign. His victories helped establish Han military control across parts of the northern frontier.
Western Regions Protectorate: A Han administrative and military authority established in the Tarim Basin in 60 BCE. Its creation reflected Han expansion into lands contested during the wars.
Han dynasty: A Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 202 BCE to 220 CE, with an interruption by the Xin dynasty. Its frontier institutions and resources sustained repeated campaigns against the Xiongnu.
Modu Chanyu: The Xiongnu ruler who unified the confederation and expanded its power in the early second century BCE. His consolidation made the Xiongnu a formidable counterpart to the early Han.
Huo Qubing: A Han general famed for fast cavalry campaigns against the Xiongnu in the second century BCE. His 121 BCE victories helped Han seize the Hexi Corridor.
Dingling: An ancient people of the northern Eurasian steppe who fought the Xiongnu and later entered other political alliances. Xiongnu defeats and internal divisions altered the relations among steppe peoples.
Battle of Mobei: A major Han campaign against the Xiongnu in the northern steppe in 119 BCE. The costly expedition exemplified Han efforts to strike deep into Xiongnu territory.
Emperor Gaozu of Han: The founding emperor of the Han dynasty, who ruled from 202 to 195 BCE. His defeat at Baideng helped prompt early Han accommodation with the Xiongnu.
