HDMI

HDMI is an interface standard that carries uncompressed digital video and audio between devices over a single cable, with optional control and network features.

Transition-Minimized Differential Signaling: A signaling method that encodes data for transmission over differential electrical pairs while limiting signal transitions. Traditional HDMI links use this method to transmit high-speed video data.
Digital video: A representation of moving images as discrete digital data. HDMI carries video as digital data rather than an analog picture signal.
Home theater: A home audiovisual system designed to reproduce films and other media on a large display with immersive sound. HDMI links players, televisions, and receivers in typical home theater setups.
DisplayPort: A digital display interface standard developed primarily for connecting computers to monitors and other displays. It competes with HDMI in computer displays and supports different connection features.
Display Data Channel: A bidirectional communication channel that lets a source read display capabilities and exchange control data. HDMI uses it to discover supported resolutions and formats.
Digital audio: Sound represented and transmitted as discrete numerical samples. HDMI can carry multichannel audio alongside video in the same connection.
Audio-video receiver: A component that switches audiovisual sources and drives speakers in a home entertainment system. Its HDMI inputs and outputs route video and audio among connected devices.
DVI: A digital video interface standard developed for computer displays, with some variants also supporting analog video. DVI commonly carries video without HDMI’s standard audio and device-control features.
Extended Display Identification Data: A data structure that describes a display’s supported timings, resolutions, and audio formats. The source reads this information over the Display Data Channel before sending a signal.
Video resolution: The number of pixels used to form a displayed image, commonly stated as width by height. Resolution is one measure of the video formats an HDMI link must support.
