Heliocentrism

Heliocentrism is the model in which Earth and the other planets orbit the Sun. Its adoption replaced Earth-centered systems as the standard account of planetary motion.

Copernican system: Nicolaus Copernicus’s mathematical model placed the Sun near the center and made Earth a moving planet. Its circular orbits and epicycles gave early mathematical form to heliocentrism.
Aristarchus of Samos: An ancient Greek astronomer who proposed that Earth rotates and revolves around a stationary Sun. His proposal is the earliest known explicit version of a Sun-centered cosmos.
Solar System: The Sun and the celestial bodies gravitationally bound to it, including planets, moons, asteroids, and comets. Heliocentrism describes the large-scale arrangement and motions of this system.
Johannes Kepler: A German astronomer who formulated three laws describing planetary orbits from Tycho Brahe’s observations. His elliptical orbits made the heliocentric model more accurate and physically compelling.
Scientific realism: The philosophical view that successful scientific theories describe a real world, including entities and structures beyond direct observation. Debates over whether Earth truly moves raised questions about models as descriptions or calculation tools.
Kepler's laws of planetary motion: Three mathematical laws describing planetary orbits, orbital speeds, and the relation between orbital size and period. Elliptical orbits replaced the Copernican system’s circles and improved its predictions.
On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres: Nicolaus Copernicus’s 1543 book presenting a mathematical model in which Earth and the planets orbit the Sun. This publication made heliocentrism a detailed, assessable alternative to Earth-centered astronomy.
Geocentrism: The model that places Earth at the center of the cosmos, with celestial bodies moving around it. Its central claim directly opposes heliocentrism’s moving Earth.
Galileo Galilei: An Italian astronomer and physicist whose telescopic discoveries challenged traditional accounts of the heavens. His observations of Venus and Jupiter’s moons supported a cosmos not centered on Earth.
Inquisition: Institutions of the Catholic Church that investigated and judged matters of doctrine and religious discipline. The Roman Inquisition formally addressed Galileo’s public defense of heliocentrism.
