Hellenistic architecture

Hellenistic architecture is the architecture of Greek-speaking regions from the late fourth to first centuries BCE. It is known for varied building types, monumental scale, and elaborate urban settings.

Classical architecture: The architectural traditions of ancient Greece and Rome, especially their use of formal orders and proportion. Hellenistic builders inherited Greek architectural forms while adapting them to new scales and settings.
Greek temple: A sacred building in ancient Greece, usually organized around an enclosed chamber and a surrounding colonnade. Hellenistic temples reworked a familiar building type at more ambitious scales.
Pergamon: An ancient Greek city in western Anatolia that became the capital of the Attalid kingdom. Its acropolis concentrates Hellenistic terraces, sanctuaries, and civic buildings in a striking urban composition.
Roman architecture: The architectural tradition of ancient Rome, combining Greek forms with Roman engineering and construction practices. Roman builders adopted and transformed Greek architectural forms encountered across Hellenistic regions.

Ionic order: An ancient Greek architectural order distinguished by slender columns with volute capitals and a continuous frieze. Its ornamental vocabulary suited the elaborate façades and interiors of Hellenistic buildings.
Theater of Pergamon: A steeply banked ancient theater on the acropolis of Pergamon, adapted to a sharply sloping hillside. Its dramatic placement shows how Hellenistic architects integrated performance spaces with difficult terrain.
