Hellenistic sculpture

Sculpture produced in the Greek world between Alexander the Great’s death in 323 BCE and Rome’s conquest of Egypt in 30 BCE. It is known for varied subjects, dramatic movement, and expressive naturalism.

Classical Greek sculpture: Sculpture made in the Greek world from the fifth to fourth centuries BCE, often associated with idealized forms and balanced compositions. Hellenistic artists inherited its conventions while expanding their emotional range and treatment of the body.
Winged Victory of Samothrace: A monumental marble statue of the winged goddess Nike, made around the second century BCE and displayed at Samothrace. Its wind-swept drapery and forward motion exemplify the period’s interest in theatrical movement.
Contrapposto: An asymmetrical standing pose in which the body’s weight rests chiefly on one leg. Hellenistic sculptors used weight shifts to make figures appear poised for movement.
Pergamon Altar: A monumental second-century BCE altar at Pergamon, famous for its sculpted frieze of gods fighting giants. Its relief program turned dynastic power into a dramatic mythological victory.
Roman copies of Greek sculpture: Roman-made replicas and adaptations of Greek sculptures, often reproducing lost works in marble. Many Hellenistic compositions are known chiefly through Roman copies.
Alexander the Great: King of Macedon who created an empire stretching from Greece to Egypt and parts of western Asia. His conquests helped spread Greek artistic practices across the territories where Hellenistic sculpture developed.
Laocoön and His Sons: A marble group showing the Trojan priest Laocoön and his sons attacked by sea serpents. Its contorted bodies and anguish make bodily suffering a central subject.
Foreshortening: The representation of a form at an angle so that it appears compressed in depth. Strongly angled limbs and torsos made figures read differently from changing viewpoints.
Ruler cult in the Hellenistic world: The religious honors given to Hellenistic kings and queens by cities and communities. Portrait statues helped present rulers as powerful, accessible, or divinely favored.
Roman sculpture: Sculpture produced in the Roman world, combining local practices with Greek and other Mediterranean traditions. Roman patrons collected, copied, and adapted Hellenistic works and styles.
