Henri Becquerel

Henri Becquerel was a French physicist who discovered spontaneous radioactivity in 1896 by finding that uranium salts exposed photographic plates without sunlight. He shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics with Marie and Pierre Curie.

Spontaneous radioactivity: The emission of ionizing radiation by unstable atomic nuclei without external stimulation. Becquerel established that uranium compounds emitted penetrating radiation without prior exposure to light.
