Henry the Lion

Henry the Lion (c. 1129–1195) was a Welf prince who ruled as Duke of Saxony and Bavaria. His territorial ambitions, court patronage, and settlement policies made him one of the most powerful German princes of his age.

Welf dynasty: A European dynasty whose members held major territories and political offices, especially in Germany and Britain. Henry inherited his family’s claims and political networks from this dynasty.
Munich: The capital of Bavaria, whose settlement began in the 12th century. Henry secured a bridge and market there in 1158, an event traditionally treated as the city’s founding.
Henry the Proud: A Welf duke who ruled Bavaria and Saxony and was Henry the Lion’s father. His inheritance and failed struggle with the Hohenstaufen shaped his son’s early position.
Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg: A Welf principality established in 1235 from territories associated with Henry the Lion’s family. Its creation restored a major territorial base to Henry’s descendants.

Matilda of England: A daughter of Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine who married Henry the Lion. Her marriage connected Henry’s court to the Angevin royal family.
Duchy of Westphalia: A medieval territory ruled by the archbishops of Cologne in western Germany. It was among the lands that passed to Cologne after Henry’s fall.
Imperial immediacy: A legal status placing a territory or institution directly under the Holy Roman Emperor. The redistribution of Henry’s lands altered which rulers and territories answered directly to the emperor.
