Ostsiedlung

Ostsiedlung was the medieval migration and settlement of German-speaking people eastward into Central and Eastern Europe, especially from the 12th to 14th centuries.

German law: A family of medieval legal traditions used in German-speaking lands and adopted by towns and villages elsewhere in Europe. Locators and settlers brought legal customs that influenced the organization of new eastern towns.
Eastern March: A frontier region of the East Frankish and later German kingdom, organized to extend political control eastward. Earlier frontier expansion helped establish institutions and contacts before the main settlement movement.
Cistercians: A Catholic monastic order founded in 1098 that developed a network of monasteries across medieval Europe. Cistercian houses acquired land and helped cultivate and administer estates in eastern regions.
Germanization: The spread or imposition of German language, culture, or institutions among populations of other languages. This cultural process could accompany settlement, but it is not identical to migration itself.

Drang nach Osten: A political slogan meaning “drive to the East,” used especially in modern German nationalist narratives. The slogan recast medieval settlement as a continuous national mission, a later interpretation rather than a medieval concept.
Magdeburg rights: A body of municipal law originating in Magdeburg and adopted by towns across Central and Eastern Europe. This influential town-law system helped organize many settlements established eastward.
Henry the Lion: A powerful Welf duke of Saxony and Bavaria who expanded his influence in northern Germany during the 12th century. His campaigns and patronage contributed to German settlement and lordship east of the Elbe.
