Heungseon Daewongun

Heungseon Daewongun was a Korean political leader who governed Joseon as regent for his son, King Gojong, from 1863 to 1873 and later influenced court politics.

Gyeongbokgung: The principal royal palace of the Joseon dynasty in Seoul, originally built in the fourteenth century. Daewongun ordered its reconstruction to restore royal prestige and strengthen the monarchy.
French campaign against Korea: A 1866 French military expedition against Joseon following the execution of French Catholic missionaries and Korean converts. The campaign intensified Daewongun’s resistance to foreign encroachment and reinforced isolationist policies.
Queen Min: The consort of King Gojong, later known as Empress Myeongseong, who became a central Joseon political figure. Her faction displaced Daewongun from influence and opposed his later attempts to direct court policy.
Andong Kim clan: A powerful Korean aristocratic lineage that dominated Joseon court politics during much of the nineteenth century. Daewongun’s rise challenged the clan’s influence over royal appointments and government.
Tonghak: A Korean religious and social movement founded by Choe Je-u in 1860 that opposed foreign influence and official corruption. Its later mass movement exposed social pressures that Daewongun’s court reforms had not resolved.
Seowon: Private Confucian academies in Korea that served as schools and centers of local political influence. He closed most seowon to curb elite privilege and recover land and revenue for the state.
United States expedition to Korea: A 1871 American military expedition against Joseon after a diplomatic mission was rejected. Its battles at Ganghwa tested the coastal defenses maintained under Daewongun’s government.
Choe Ik-hyeon: A Korean Confucian scholar and official who became a leading opponent of Daewongun’s policies. His memorials challenged Daewongun’s authority and helped prompt the regent’s retirement in 1873.
Sedo politics: A late Joseon system in which powerful royal in-law families dominated government and court appointments. Daewongun presented his reforms as a break with the factional rule that preceded his regency.
Gabo Reform: A series of government reforms in Korea beginning in 1894 that transformed institutions and social practices. The reforms pursued a different program of state transformation after Daewongun’s regency and renewed political return.
