Jeongjo of Joseon

Jeongjo was the 22nd king of Korea’s Joseon dynasty, ruling from 1776 to 1800. He strengthened royal authority, supported scholarship, and promoted administrative and military reforms.

Gyujanggak: A royal library and scholarly institute established by Jeongjo at Changdeokgung Palace. It trained and employed scholars whose work supported Jeongjo’s governing program.
Sado, Crown Prince of Joseon: The son of King Yeongjo and father of Jeongjo, who died after being confined in a rice chest in 1762. Sado’s death shaped Jeongjo’s family history and efforts to restore his father’s standing.
Jeong Yak-yong: A Korean Silhak scholar and government official whose writings addressed science, administration, and social reform. Jeong served under Jeongjo and contributed practical expertise to the king’s reforming court.
Suwon: A city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, founded as a planned royal center in the late eighteenth century. Jeongjo developed Suwon around Hwaseong as a strategic and commemorative center.
Sukjong of Joseon: The 19th king of Joseon, who ruled from 1674 to 1720 and used factional conflict to reinforce royal authority. Sukjong’s forceful factional interventions preceded the different balancing strategy Jeongjo pursued.
Jangyongyeong: A royal military guard established by Jeongjo in 1785. This force gave the king a military institution closely tied to his authority.
King Yeongjo: The 21st king of Joseon, who ruled from 1724 to 1776 and was Jeongjo’s grandfather. Yeongjo’s long reign and succession decisions formed the political world Jeongjo inherited.
Chae Jegong: A Joseon official who served as chief state councillor under Jeongjo. He was a prominent royal ally amid factional struggles at court.
Hwaseong Fortress: A fortified city built at Suwon under Jeongjo’s direction in the 1790s. Its surviving walls and records preserve the scale of Jeongjo’s building program.
Gwanghaegun: The 15th king of Joseon, deposed in 1623 after a contested reign marked by factional conflict. His deposition underscores the dynastic risks Jeongjo faced amid court factionalism.
