History of anesthesia

The history of anesthesia traces the development of methods and drugs that reduce pain, sensation, or awareness during surgery and other procedures.

Nitrous oxide: A colorless gas used as an inhaled anesthetic and analgesic. Humphry Davy’s experiments with the gas helped inspire its use in surgery.
General anesthesia: A drug-induced state of unconsciousness and reduced response to painful stimulation. Its clinical development is the central thread of anesthesia’s history.
Horace Wells: An American dentist who promoted nitrous oxide for dental anesthesia in the 1840s. Wells’s early demonstrations preceded the successful public presentation of ether.
Surgical anesthesia: The use of anesthetic methods to permit surgical procedures without intolerable pain or movement. The need to make operations tolerable drove anesthesia’s earliest development.
Chloroform: A volatile chemical once widely used as an inhaled anesthetic, later largely abandoned because of serious toxicity. It competed with ether but carried greater risk of sudden cardiac complications.
Ether anesthesia: The use of diethyl ether to induce unconsciousness during surgery. Its 1846 public demonstration in Boston became a landmark in surgical anesthesia.
Local anesthesia: Loss of sensation in a limited body region without necessarily causing unconsciousness. Its emergence expanded pain control beyond whole-body unconsciousness.
Gardner Quincy Colton: An American lecturer whose nitrous oxide demonstrations helped revive its use in dentistry. Colton’s demonstrations supplied the gas and public interest behind later dental practice.
Obstetric anesthesia: Anesthesia and analgesia used during labor, childbirth, and obstetric procedures. Childbirth became a major arena for debates over anesthetic risks and benefits.
Diethyl ether: A volatile organic compound formerly used to induce general anesthesia. Its flammability and slow recovery prompted searches for safer, more manageable agents.
