The history of geology traces how people developed explanations, methods, institutions, and practices for studying Earth and its materials over time.

Aristotle: An ancient Greek philosopher whose writings shaped natural philosophy, including explanations of fossils and Earth processes. His account of gradual geological change influenced European thought for centuries.
Stratigraphy: The study of rock layers and their relationships in space and time. Comparing strata made relative sequences of geological events possible.
William Smith: An English surveyor who produced an influential geological map of England, Wales, and part of Scotland in 1815. His mapping showed how fossil succession could correlate strata across regions.
Deep time: The immense span of geological history, measured in millions to billions of years. Accepting deep time made slow geological change a credible explanation for Earth’s features.
Anthropocene: A proposed geological epoch defined by substantial human influence on Earth’s systems. Debate over its formal status tests how geological time units are established.
Theophrastus: An ancient Greek philosopher and naturalist who wrote early systematic works on rocks and minerals. His treatises preserved some of the earliest organized descriptions of geological materials.
Principle of superposition: The rule that, in an undisturbed sequence, older sedimentary layers lie beneath younger ones. It provided a basic method for ordering strata before numerical dating.
Charles Lyell: A nineteenth-century Scottish geologist who argued for gradual processes operating over immense spans of time. His Principles of Geology shaped geological reasoning and influenced Charles Darwin.
Age of Earth: The elapsed time since Earth formed, estimated at about 4.54 billion years. Improved dating methods replaced short chronologies with a measured planetary history.
Great Oxidation Event: A major rise in atmospheric oxygen roughly 2.4 billion years ago, driven largely by microbial activity. Its causes and timing show how geologists reconstruct global change from fragmentary ancient evidence.
