History of Taiwan

The history of Taiwan encompasses the island’s Indigenous societies, successive migrations and regimes, and its changing political status.

Austronesian peoples: A language-linked population historically spread across Taiwan, Island Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. Taiwan is widely regarded as an important early center of Austronesian expansion.
Republic of Formosa: A short-lived republic proclaimed in Taiwan in 1895 in resistance to Japanese annexation. Its brief existence reveals local resistance during the handover from Qing to Japanese rule.
