Knowra HMS Endeavour HMS Endeavour HMS Endeavour was a British Royal Navy bark commanded by James Cook on his first Pacific exploration voyage, from 1768 to 1771. The voyage charted parts of the Pacific and carried the expedition to Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia.
Tahiti : An island in French Polynesia that became a major center of European contact in the eighteenth century. The ship reached Tahiti in 1769 so astronomers could observe the transit of Venus.
Bark (ship) : A sailing vessel with three or more masts, square-rigged on the foremast and mainmast, and fore-and-aft-rigged on the aftermast. Endeavour’s rig made it a bark, a practical arrangement for ocean sailing.
James Cook : A British naval captain, navigator, and cartographer who led three voyages of exploration in the Pacific. Cook commanded Endeavour and directed its surveying and encounters.
First voyage of James Cook : James Cook’s 1768–1771 Pacific expedition, undertaken aboard HMS Endeavour for exploration and scientific observation. Endeavour’s history is inseparable from the expedition it carried.
HMS Endeavour replica : A full-scale replica of Cook’s bark, launched in 1994 and used as a museum ship and sailing vessel. The replica recreates the historic ship but is not the original vessel.
Transit of Venus (1769) : A rare passage of Venus across the Sun observed by astronomers in 1769 to estimate the scale of the solar system. Cook’s expedition sailed to Tahiti partly to record this astronomical event.
Collier (ship) : A ship built or used to carry coal, often with a broad, sturdy hull. Endeavour began as the coal carrier Earl of Pembroke before conversion for exploration.
Joseph Banks : An English naturalist and patron of science who joined James Cook’s first Pacific voyage. Banks funded a scientific party aboard Endeavour and collected natural-history specimens.
Discovery of Australia by Europeans : The process by which European voyagers explored and mapped the Australian continent and its coasts. Cook’s 1770 voyage charted part of Australia’s east coast and claimed it for Britain.
HMS Endeavour (1763) : The Royal Navy bark launched as the collier Earl of Pembroke and renamed Endeavour in 1768. This is the original ship, distinct from later vessels and replicas sharing its name.
