Holiness movement

The Holiness movement is a nineteenth-century Protestant renewal movement that emphasized sanctification and the pursuit of a life made holy by God. It grew chiefly from Wesleyan Methodism and shaped later evangelical and Pentecostal traditions.

John Wesley: John Wesley was an eighteenth-century Anglican cleric whose preaching and organizing founded Methodism. His doctrine of Christian perfection supplied the movement’s central theological inheritance.
Sanctification: Sanctification is the process or state of being made holy in Christian theology. The movement organized its message around sanctification as a distinct work of divine grace.
John Inskip: John Inskip was an American Methodist minister and leading organizer of nineteenth-century holiness camp meetings. He helped turn scattered meetings into a coordinated national campaign for holiness.
Church of the Nazarene: The Church of the Nazarene is a Protestant denomination formed in 1908 from several American holiness groups. It became the largest denomination explicitly rooted in the Holiness movement.
Wesleyan theology: Wesleyan theology is a Protestant tradition emphasizing grace, free response, and growth in holiness. It furnished the theological framework that Holiness advocates adapted and intensified.
Christian perfection: Christian perfection is the theological claim that believers can attain complete love of God and neighbor through grace. Holiness advocates reinterpreted Wesley’s language of perfection as attainable entire sanctification.
B.T. Roberts: B.T. Roberts was an American Methodist minister who founded the Free Methodist Church in 1860. His reform efforts joined holiness preaching to opposition to wealth, slavery, and Methodist institutional practices.
Free Methodist Church: The Free Methodist Church is a Methodist denomination founded in the United States in 1860. It embodied holiness reform through distinctive commitments to sanctification and social concerns.
Second Great Awakening: The Second Great Awakening was a series of Protestant revivals in the United States from the late eighteenth to mid-nineteenth centuries. Its revival culture helped create the networks and practices through which holiness teaching spread.
Entire sanctification: Entire sanctification is a doctrine that God can cleanse believers from inward sin and consecrate them wholly to divine service. It became the movement’s defining claim about a decisive experience after conversion.
