Holy League

The Holy League was a coalition formed in 1684 by the Habsburg Monarchy, Poland-Lithuania, and Venice to fight the Ottoman Empire during the Great Turkish War.

Siege of Vienna (1683): The Ottoman Empire’s unsuccessful siege of Vienna, lifted by a relief army on 12 September 1683. The siege prompted the alliance that became the Holy League.
Battle of Vienna: The 1683 battle in which a relief army defeated Ottoman forces besieging Vienna. The battle opened the possibility of a sustained allied counteroffensive.
Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor: Habsburg ruler and Holy Roman Emperor from 1658 to 1705, who led the monarchy through the Great Turkish War. His monarchy was the league’s principal land power.
Kingdom of Hungary: A historic kingdom in central Europe whose lands became a major theater of Ottoman–Habsburg conflict. The league’s victories shifted much of Hungary from Ottoman to Habsburg control.
Pope Innocent XI: Pope from 1676 to 1689 who supported efforts to unite Christian powers against Ottoman expansion. His diplomacy and financial support helped bring the league together.
Battle of Buda (1686): A 1686 Habsburg-led siege that captured Buda from the Ottoman Empire. The capture was a major early result of the league’s land campaign.
John III Sobieski: King of Poland from 1674 to 1696, remembered for leading Polish forces at the relief of Vienna. His intervention helped establish Poland-Lithuania as a founding ally.
Principality of Transylvania: A principality in central Europe that became a contested Ottoman and Habsburg dependency. Its political status changed as the war advanced Habsburg power.
Treaty of Warsaw (1683): An alliance treaty between Poland-Lithuania and the Habsburg Monarchy, concluded before the relief of Vienna. It established the Habsburg–Polish partnership that preceded the league.
Battle of Mohács (1687): A 1687 Habsburg victory over Ottoman forces near Mohács in Hungary. It helped secure Habsburg control over much of Hungary.
