Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa is a northeastern African region projecting into the Arabian Sea, generally comprising Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti.

Somalia: Somalia is a country on the easternmost part of the African continent, with a long coastline along the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden. It occupies the peninsula’s eastern edge and gives the region its distinctive outline.
Punt (land): Punt was an ancient region known to Egyptians through trade expeditions, probably located somewhere in the southern Red Sea region. Egyptian records show early commerce between the Horn’s coasts and the Nile world.
Intertropical Convergence Zone: The Intertropical Convergence Zone is a shifting belt of low pressure near the equator where trade winds meet and rainfall is common. Its seasonal movement helps govern the region’s uneven rainy seasons.
Ogaden War: The Ogaden War was a 1977–1978 conflict between Somalia and Ethiopia over the Ogaden region. It transformed regional alliances and intensified militarization between neighboring states.
Greater Horn of Africa: The Greater Horn of Africa is a broader regional designation that includes additional neighboring countries beyond the Horn’s core states. This expanded frame captures cross-border drought, migration, and political ties.
Ethiopia: Ethiopia is a landlocked country in the Horn of Africa, centered on a highland plateau and home to many ethnic and linguistic communities. Its highlands form the region’s largest inland core.
Aksumite Empire: The Aksumite Empire was an ancient kingdom centered in present-day Ethiopia and Eritrea, prominent in Red Sea trade during the first millennium CE. Aksum established one of the region’s major early states and trading powers.
Indian Ocean Dipole: The Indian Ocean Dipole is a climate pattern marked by changing sea-surface temperature differences between the western and eastern tropical Indian Ocean. Its positive phases can bring unusually heavy rains to parts of the Horn.
Eritrean War of Independence: The Eritrean War of Independence was a long conflict ending in Eritrea’s separation from Ethiopia in 1993. Its outcome redrew the Horn’s borders and left a lasting interstate rivalry.
East Africa: East Africa is a broad region of the African continent whose boundaries vary by geographic and political usage. The Horn is commonly treated as a northeastern subregion of East Africa.
