House of Habsburg

The House of Habsburg was a European dynasty whose branches ruled Austria, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Spanish Empire. Its power grew through inheritance, strategic marriages, and territorial expansion.

Habsburg Castle: A medieval castle in present-day Switzerland that gave the House of Habsburg its name. The family’s name and early territorial identity came from this ancestral stronghold.
Pragmatic Sanction of 1713: A decree issued by Charles VI to secure the indivisibility of Habsburg lands and his daughter’s succession. It attempted to preserve the composite monarchy when the male line was expected to end.
Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor: A Habsburg emperor who ruled from 1508 to 1519 and expanded his family’s influence through marriage and war. His marriage alliances helped bring the Burgundian inheritance and future Spanish claims into Habsburg hands.
