Knowra Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I was a Habsburg ruler who served as Holy Roman Emperor from 1658 until his death in 1705. His reign was marked by wars against the Ottoman Empire and France and by the expansion of Habsburg power.
Great Turkish War : A 1683–1699 conflict in which the Habsburg-led Holy League pushed the Ottoman Empire out of much of Hungary. Its victories under Leopold’s rule greatly enlarged Habsburg territory in central Europe.
Holy Roman Empire : A multi-state polity in central Europe whose elected emperor held authority alongside territorial rulers. Leopold’s imperial title gave him a role distinct from his hereditary rule over Habsburg lands.
Eleonore Magdalene of Neuburg : Leopold I’s third wife and empress consort, who bore his surviving sons Joseph I and Charles VI. Her sons became the central heirs around whom Leopold’s dynastic policy revolved.
