Hu Yaobang

Hu Yaobang (1915–1989) was a Chinese Communist Party leader and general secretary from 1982 to 1987. His support for political reform and his death helped make him a symbol of reformist hopes in China.

Deng Xiaoping: Chinese Communist leader who directed the country’s reform and opening after Mao Zedong’s death. Deng backed Hu’s rise but later supported his removal as party general secretary.
1986–1987 Chinese student demonstrations: A wave of student protests in Chinese cities calling for political change and greater freedoms. The protests prompted conservative criticism of Hu’s leadership and preceded his removal.

1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre: A protest movement centered in Beijing that was suppressed by the Chinese military in June 1989. Public mourning for Hu helped spark the protest movement that culminated in the June crackdown.
Long March: The Chinese Communists’ 1934–1935 retreat that became a defining episode in party history. Hu joined the Communist movement as a young revolutionary during the era of the Long March.
Four Cardinal Principles: Deng Xiaoping’s 1979 principles affirming socialism, the people’s democratic dictatorship, party leadership, and Marxism-Leninism-Mao Zedong Thought. These principles set boundaries on political reform and constrained Hu’s liberalizing proposals.
Chen Yun: Chinese Communist leader who favored cautious economic reform and strong party control. Chen represented the conservative influence that constrained Hu’s reform program.
