Hungarian Diet

The representative assembly of the Kingdom of Hungary, composed chiefly of nobles and clergy in its medieval and early modern forms. It negotiated taxation and legislation with the monarch and later became a parliamentary institution.

Estates of the Realm: A political order in which legally distinct social groups represented their interests in assemblies. The Diet began as an assembly of privileged estates rather than a parliament elected by all inhabitants.
Golden Bull of 1222: A royal charter issued by Andrew II of Hungary that confirmed privileges of nobles and limited certain royal powers. It became a landmark in the legal tradition invoked by the Hungarian estates.
Maria Theresa: Habsburg ruler from 1740 to 1780 who governed the hereditary lands and Kingdom of Hungary. Her negotiations with the Diet secured support during the War of the Austrian Succession.

Joseph II: Holy Roman Emperor and Habsburg ruler who pursued centralized reforms, often without seeking Hungarian Diet approval. His rule illustrates the conflict between reform from above and the Diet's constitutional claims.
Hungarian Revolution of 1848: A political revolution in the Kingdom of Hungary that sought constitutional government and national autonomy. The Diet became the institutional center of revolutionary reform and conflict with the Habsburgs.
County of Hungary: A historic territorial and administrative unit of the Kingdom of Hungary, with local noble institutions. County assemblies selected many representatives sent to the national Diet.
Szekesfehervar: A Hungarian city that served as a royal and ecclesiastical center in the medieval kingdom. Medieval assemblies and royal gatherings were associated with this major political center.
