Hungarian invasions of Europe

A series of Magyar military raids across Europe in the ninth and tenth centuries, ending after their defeat at the Battle of Lechfeld in 955.

Magyar conquest of the Carpathian Basin: The Magyar migration and military occupation of the Carpathian Basin around the late ninth century. The new homeland provided the base from which Magyar forces launched raids westward.
Magyars: A Uralic-speaking people whose ancestors settled in the Carpathian Basin in the late ninth century. The Magyar communities organized the forces that carried out the raids.
Otto I, Holy Roman Emperor: The East Frankish king crowned emperor in 962, who defeated the Magyars at Lechfeld in 955. His victory demonstrated the military response that halted the raids.
Battle of Riade: A 933 battle in which Henry I of Germany defeated a Magyar raiding force near the Unstrut River. The defeat showed that German forces could resist Magyar incursions before Lechfeld.
Mounted archery: A military technique in which mounted warriors shoot bows while riding, often using composite bows. Mobile archers could strike quickly and retreat before slower forces closed in.
Etelköz: A region north of the Black Sea where Magyars lived before settling in the Carpathian Basin. Magyar migration from this region preceded their westward campaigns.
Augsburg: A city in present-day Bavaria that served as a key stronghold during the 955 campaign. The Magyar siege there brought Otto’s army into the confrontation at Lechfeld.
Battle of Lechfeld: A 955 battle near Augsburg in which Otto I’s forces defeated a Magyar army. This decisive defeat ended the major western raids.
Composite bow: A bow built from layered materials, commonly wood, horn, and sinew, to combine power with compact size. Its compact power suited the rapid mounted fighting used in Magyar raids.
Carpathian Basin: A geographic region centered on the Danube basin and enclosed by the Carpathian Mountains. Its position gave Magyar leaders access to routes into central and western Europe.
