Hydrangea

Hydrangea is a genus of flowering shrubs and vines native mainly to Asia and the Americas. Many species produce large flower clusters whose colors can change with soil chemistry.

Anthocyanin: A class of plant pigments that produces red, purple, and blue colors in flowers and other tissues. Anthocyanins provide the pigments whose color shifts in many hydrangea flowers.
Inflorescence: A group or arrangement of flowers on a plant stem. Hydrangea blooms are organized as inflorescences rather than single flowers.
Hydrangea paniculata: An East Asian hydrangea species that bears conical flower clusters, often on a large shrub or small tree. Its conical blooms and reliable flowering make it a widely planted garden species.
Carl Linnaeus: A Swedish botanist who established the binomial system of biological nomenclature and classified thousands of organisms. Linnaeus published the genus name Hydrangea in the eighteenth century.
Aluminum: A metallic chemical element that plants can absorb from acidic soils, where it is more soluble. Available aluminum helps turn some hydrangea sepals blue.
Corymb: A flat-topped flower cluster in which lower flower stalks are longer than upper ones. Some hydrangeas form lacecap clusters with this branching arrangement.
Hydrangea arborescens: An eastern North American hydrangea species, commonly grown as a shrub with rounded flower clusters. Cultivars such as 'Annabelle' are valued for large white flower heads.
Hydrangea serrata: An East Asian hydrangea species, closely related to Hydrangea macrophylla and often cultivated for lacecap blooms. This species represents the genus's East Asian diversity and has a long garden history.
Soil pH: A measure of soil acidity or alkalinity based on hydrogen-ion activity. Soil pH influences aluminum solubility and thus color in susceptible hydrangeas.
Panicle: A branched flower cluster whose stalks bear smaller clusters or individual flowers. Panicle hydrangeas carry their flowers in elongated, branched clusters.
