Iberian Union

The dynastic union of Portugal and the Spanish Monarchy from 1580 to 1640, when Habsburg kings ruled both crowns while their institutions and legal systems remained separate.

Cortes of Tomar: The Portuguese assembly that recognized Philip II of Spain as king of Portugal in 1581 and set conditions for his rule. Its conditions formalized Portugal’s continued institutions and laws under the shared monarch.
