Treaty of Zamora

The Treaty of Zamora was a 1143 agreement in which Alfonso VII of León and Castile recognized Afonso Henriques as king, marking a key step in Portugal’s emergence as an independent kingdom.

Battle of São Mamede: A 1128 battle near Guimarães in which forces led by Afonso Henriques defeated those of his mother, Teresa of León. Afonso’s victory established his control in Portugal and began the political rupture that preceded Zamora.
Kingdom of Portugal: The Iberian kingdom founded in the twelfth century and later expanded into a global maritime empire. The treaty’s recognition helped establish the kingdom’s status among Iberian powers.
