Ibn Tumart

Ibn Tumart was a 12th-century Amazigh religious reformer who founded the Almohad movement and proclaimed himself the Mahdi. His teachings challenged Almoravid rule in the Maghreb.

Masmuda: A confederation of Amazigh tribes in the High Atlas region of Morocco. Ibn Tumart drew his earliest supporters from Masmuda communities in the High Atlas.
Mahdi: An Islamic messianic figure expected in many traditions to establish justice before the end of time. Ibn Tumart's self-proclamation as Mahdi gave his reform movement a messianic claim to authority.
